Hair Trauma—Ingredients In Products You Should Be Avoiding

You might be wondering how to find the right hair product and avoid hair trauma. Look no further! Finding the right hair products for your unique hair type can be difficult. Out of hundreds of different products on the shelves, with all different claims, how could you possibly narrow down your options? Looking for harmful ingredients in hair products is a must for healthy, post-worthy hair.

Here are a few common ingredients in hair products that you should avoid:

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

Is used to help mix together ingredients in a product. But it's also known to cause irritation, so if you have sensitive skin or scalp, look out for this ingredient! Sulfates can also fade color quicker by breaking down the color on the hair cuticle.

Parabens

Are preservatives that prevent bacteria growth and increase shelf life in cosmetic products. However, parabens may interfere with your endocrine system, as they soak into the scalp and skin when applied. We recommend using products that don't contain parabens so you're not applying any unnecessary chemicals onto your scalp or into your body!

Fragrance Or Phthalates

Is a synthetic scent added to personal care products like shampoo and conditioner. Most companies use synthetic fragrance in addition to other harmful ingredients, which can be stripping to the natural oils of the hair and scalp. If you have dandruff, definitely avoid this one!

Mineral Oil

This ingredient coats the hair and prevents it from absorbing moisture and compromises the cuticle layer of the hair, making it rough and dull looking. Being heavier than water, mineral oil also clogs pores and traps dirt on your scalp instead of removing it from your hair shafts so it doesn't rinse out easily during shampooing. This means that it can sit on top of your head for days without being removed completely!

Synthetic Colors And Dyes

Many different hair products contain synthetic colors and dyes. This can cause damage to the hair cuticle and leave it vulnerable to more damage from other elements. Many artificial colors and dyes are also made of coal tar, which may contain heavy metal salts like lead that can deposit toxicity onto the scalp.

Your hair is unique, and your hair products should be too! Every hair product, may not work on every hair type.
